MUHSEN

Sixteen chapters on one login. Then the site they needed built.

MUHSEN supports Muslims with disabilities and their families, through chapters across the US, Canada and Australia. Their chapters run on Ummah. Their annual survey needed something nobody sells off the shelf, so we built it.

Who they are

A national organization built out of local chapters.

MUHSEN works so that Muslims with disabilities and their families are not left at the edge of community life. Masjid certification, respite care, wellness support groups, weekend school, an adult day program, convention services, an Umrah trip. More than 1,800 families are registered with them.

None of that happens from a head office. It happens in Detroit, in Naperville, in Calgary, in Carrollton, in Howard County, run by chapter volunteers who know their own city. That structure is the whole strength of the organization, and it is also the thing most software handles badly.

Chapters

Sixteen communities, and nobody signs out to move between them.

Each MUHSEN chapter has its own community on Ummah, with its own events, its own calendar and its own members. Sixteen of them. That is correct: a family in Michigan should see Michigan, not a national firehose.

The cost of doing it correctly is usually sixteen sets of credentials. Ummah has a parent account with sub-accounts. A national admin signs in once, switches into any chapter, works, and switches back or straight across to the next one. No signing out. No second browser. A banner makes it obvious which chapter you are currently standing in, so nothing gets posted to the wrong city.

What it replaces
Sixteen separate logins, and a national coordinator who keeps a password list because there was never another way to do it.
Reach

398 events, and they show up everywhere.

Across those chapters, MUHSEN has put 398 events onto the platform, spread across seven states and provinces. A respite weekend in Detroit. A multicultural art gallery in Naperville. A special needs retreat outside Calgary. Coffee with caregivers in Carrollton. Islamic Games in Howard County. A conference run by their Australia chapter.

Because they are on the platform rather than in a poster on a wall, those events are discoverable by families searching for exactly this kind of support, in the app and on the web, near them.

The custom build

Then they asked for something the platform does not do.

MUHSEN runs an annual survey that goes out to thousands of families. It is how they find out what their community actually needs for the year ahead, and it carries real weight inside the organization.

A generic form tool was not going to carry it. We had an intro call, we listened to what the survey had to do and who it was going to, and then we designed and built them a site for it. Not a template with their logo dropped in the corner.

What we built

A survey site that reads like MUHSEN, on their own domain

Their brand, their subdomain, their language. Consent written for the sensitive information a disability survey collects, and a form a parent can finish on a phone in under two minutes.

  • Designed and built to their brand, not a form template
  • Plain-language consent for disability information
  • Prize drawing with written, enforceable terms
  • Built for phones first, where their families actually are
The MUHSEN annual community survey site we designed and built

What the build actually had to get right

  • Consent written for the data it collects

A survey about disability collects sensitive information. The consent is stated plainly on the form: what is collected, that it is stored in the United States, that it is only used to guide their programs, and that a family can ask for it to be deleted.

  • Under two minutes, on a phone

It goes to families, not to staff at desks. If it takes longer than a couple of minutes on a phone in a masjid parking lot, the response rate tells you so.

  • A prize drawing with real terms

One entry per household, one winner drawn at random, a 48 hour window to respond, no purchase necessary. Written out, because a drawing with vague rules is a problem waiting to happen.

  • Their brand, their domain

It reads as MUHSEN, not as a form vendor. On their own subdomain, so the link they send their list is theirs and stays theirs.

Truly the best customer service and experience. May Allah put barakah in everything you do. I cannot recommend your service enough.

Platform, or the thing only you need

Tell us what your organization actually needs.

If Ummah already does it, we will show you. If it does not, we will talk about building it. Multi-chapter organizations, custom sites, custom software.
